Lafayette & Marguerite Gatling
Mr. Lafayette Gatling, Sr., through a Trust, is the current owner of approximately 445 acres near the northeast intersection of U.S. Interstate highways 80 and 57 located in the municipality of County Club Hills.  Mr. Gatling purchased the land in 1994, which is now one of the largest remaining undeveloped parcels in Cook County.  SDG’s proposed gaming entertainment resort site will comprise approximately 275 acres of these land holdings.

Mr. Gatling also founded Gatling’s Chapel in 1986 and serves as its President and Chief Executive Officer.  During that time, Gatling’s Chapel has evolved into the country’s largest family black-owned and operated funeral home, employing over 100 people.  Other subsidiary companies formed to enhance the service delivery of Gatling Chapel, Inc. include Gatling’s  Printing, Gatling’s  Charter, Inc., and Ginger’s Florist (leased).

Mr. Gatling was part owner in Angelus Funeral Home, Chicago, Illinois, from 1975 to 1979, prior to developing Gatling’s Chapel.  As a general contractor for over 26 years and a former member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, his expertise in the building trades afforded him the opportunity to participate in some of Chicagoland’s more high-profile construction projects including the Sears Tower, McCormick Place, and O’Hare International Airport.

Mrs. Marguerite Gatling, spouse of Lafayette Gatling, Sr., currently serves as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Gatling Chapel, Inc., where she directs the corporate planning, daily management, and regulatory compliance functions of the company.  Mrs. Gatling is an active participant in community affairs and holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Chicago State University and a graduate degree from the Worsham School in Mortuary Science.

 

Mr. Joseph J. Canfora
Mr. Joseph J. Canfora has more than 20 years of gaming experience for some of the premier locals market casinos throughout the country and is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Merit Management Group, LP (“Merit”) based in Hinsdale, Illinois.  Prior to founding Merit, Mr. Canfora served as President of Empress Entertainment, Inc. (“Empress”) from 1997 to 1999, which developed and owned the Empress Casinos in Joliet and Hammond, and he later became President of Horseshoe Gaming, LLC (“Horseshoe”) when it acquired Empress in 1999.  In his role at Horseshoe, Mr. Canfora directed the operations of four casino properties located in the Chicagoland area, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Prior to Empress, Mr. Canfora served as Station Casinos Inc’s (“Station”) Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, directing their Missouri and Nevada casino and hotel operations.  In 1995 he was appointed to the position of Executive Vice President and President of Missouri Operations, presiding over corporate operations and casino gaming operations in Missouri.  Mr. Canfora was the guiding force behind the opening of Station Casino Kansas City, and he conceptualized and implemented strategic marketing plans for Station’s Midwest Division.  He joined Station in 1984 where he served as Director of

Operations, Vice President of Operations and Vice President/General Manager of the Palace Station Hotel & Casino.  Mr. Canfora began his gaming career in Las Vegas in 1978, holding positions of increasing responsibility with companies such as Aladdin, Horseshoe and Maxim.


Mr. Peter A. Ferro
Mr. Peter A. Ferro, Jr. was a founding shareholder and Director of Empress Casino Joliet Corporation in 1992 and played a major role in the unprecedented success of their opening as well as their ensuing property expansion projects.  Mr. Ferro was also instrumental in Empress’ successful placement of $150 Million Senior Notes, which allowed Empress to expand its Joliet operation as well as facilitate the opening of Empress Casino Hammond in Indiana.  In January 1997, Mr. Ferro was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of both corporations.  In November 1999, Mr. Ferro and the other Directors successfully sold both Empress properties to Horseshoe for over $600 Million.

Mr. Ferro began working in the family-owned P.T. Ferro Construction Company in 1964.  He worked through every field within the company, including estimating, field operations, accounting and management.  In 1982 he became President and, in 1989, formed and became Vice President of Ferro Asphalt Corporation.


Mr. Charles P. Hammersmith, Jr.
Mr. Charles P. Hammersmith, Jr. was a founding shareholder and Director of Empress Hammond and Empress Joliet from the dates of their respective formation.  Since 1983, Mr. Hammersmith has been the President of Hammerline Express, a bulk cement transportation company.  Since 1973, Mr. Hammersmith has been employed with Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Co. where he has served as its President since 1989.
